For more than 20 years, I worked as a manager at a dairy farm.

My dad had been a dairy farmer, and his dad before him, so you could say it ran in the family.

Milking cows isn't exactly a "fast-track to success" kind of career... but it's what I grew up with, and I appreciated what I had. Until the day that...

A disaster struck our town, and my only source of employment for two decades was wiped off the map. With a wife and six kids to care for... I simply had to get a new job.

The local economy was depressed from factory jobs moving out and no opportunities moving in... so I took the only job that was available.

I became a "caser manager" at a baby food factory.

To put it in other terms... I sat and watched a "caser" package one box of baby food after another... after another... for 8 to 10 hours a day.

Rinse and repeat.

Great.

You can easily figure out that I wasn't very "challenged" at work.

But I didn't just sit there and watch those boxes go by. They were doing just fine on their own.

Instead, I sought out opportunities for more responsibility anywhere I could. I helped out in every way I can, because I knew what I was capable of. That's how I became a team leader in the 2 years I was there.

My bosses promised me that I'd get to learn more... have more responsibility... more opportunity.

But those chances never came along.

I stuck around nonetheless, because they made me the same promises you've probably heard:

- "Work for us for 20 years Jeff, and you'll be set for life."

- "Just wait until retirement Jeff, your pension will take care of everything."

- "We've got you covered Jeff, our company health care can protect your family."

They left out one important point...

It only took one afternoon for me to realize that I never should have listened to their promises...

"I'm sorry to have to tell you this...but you're going to be laid off on May 1st."

So there I was, 46 years old, 3 kids still at home, a mortgage to pay... and completely in over my head.

Do you know what a petrifying time that was?

You may know what a toll layoffs can have on a family. Heck, just since the time me and some co-workers lost our jobs, three of them have gone through a divorce. If you can't get back on track... you can lose everything.
